The Cooperative

Who we are

COOPERANTE - COOPERATIVA CARVALHO BEANS is an agroforestry cooperative of rural producers headquartered in Taquaruçu do Norte, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Carvalho Beans is the brand under which the cooperative presents itself to the market.

Who we are

We are a cooperative society of people, non-profit-distributing, constituted and active under Brazilian Law No. 5,764/71. The membership is made up of rural producers who farm land they own, lease or work in partnership within our area of operation.

The cooperative exists to defend the economic, technical and social activities of its members and to represent their common interests in extraction, reforestation, bioenergy and agriculture. That is, literally, what Article 1 of our Bylaws states.

The society has an indefinite duration and its social year runs from 1 January to 31 December. The minimum membership is 20 individuals, with no maximum.

The timeline below will be filled in with the cooperative's confirmed milestones. No date is published before it has been verified against minutes or official records.

  1. 2024

    Constitution of the cooperative

    Founding General Assembly of COOPERANTE - COOPERATIVA CARVALHO BEANS, approving the Bylaws and electing the first Board of Directors. Held on 27 July 2024 at the Salão da Vila Taquaruçu do Norte, Colniza (MT), with 23 founding members.

  2. 2026

    Registration and start of operations

    Registration of the founding instruments and start of operations with the membership. Registered with the CNPJ at the Receita Federal on 25 February 2026.

Mission, Vision and Values

Mission

To defend the economic, technical and social activities of our associated producers and to represent their common interests in extraction, reforestation, bioenergy and agriculture, by receiving, processing, storing and marketing the membership's production on better terms than any producer could obtain alone.

Vision

To be the reference for organising agroforestry producers in northern Mato Grosso, recognised for the quality of the coffee and food we deliver to market, for the strength of our governance, and for a concrete contribution to keeping families on their land and forest standing.

Values

Our values are the seven cooperative principles, adopted internationally and embraced by this cooperative.

  1. Voluntary and open membership The cooperative is open to all who can use its services and accept the responsibilities of membership.
  2. Democratic member control Members participate actively in decisions. One person, one vote.
  3. Member economic participation Members contribute equitably to the capital of the cooperative and control that capital democratically.
  4. Autonomy and independence The cooperative is autonomous and controlled by its members, including in agreements with third parties.
  5. Education, training and information The cooperative invests in the training of its members, elected officers and employees.
  6. Cooperation among cooperatives Cooperatives grow stronger by working together through local, regional and national structures.
  7. Concern for community The cooperative works for the sustainable development of its community.

What we do

Article 2 of the Bylaws sets out the cooperative's social objectives. Below they are grouped into the five areas in which they actually operate.

Production and processing

We receive members' agricultural production, process it and store it. We produce, manufacture, process, package, store and market food and ingredients for human and animal consumption. The cooperative may also operate as a general warehouse and issue instruments representing agricultural deposits.

Marketing and sales

We organise the sale of the membership's production in local, national and international markets, under trade brands adopted by the cooperative. Selling together is what gives a small producer access to buyers they would never reach alone.

Technical assistance

We provide agricultural technical assistance, prepare technical projects, carry out inspections and phytosanitary services, and disseminate agricultural technology through research projects, technical events and field days.

Inputs and logistics

We acquire and supply agricultural inputs, equipment and implements to the membership, using the collective's scale to improve price and terms. The cooperative also provides transport services.

Environment and reforestation

We encourage environmental preservation and reforestation. We produce, classify, process, package, store, certify and market seeds and seedlings, the foundation of any serious restoration programme or agroforestry system.

Area of operation

The cooperative is headquartered in Taquaruçu do Norte, Mato Grosso, and works with rural producers across the surrounding region. The Advisory Council is organised by municipality of operation, with representation proportional to the number of members in each.
